The dark knight

the dark knight

the opening sequence of the dark knight is not the typical action movie because it does not start of with fast pace camera movement however it does make your heart beat faster due to the anticipation of the bank robbery and you don't know what will happen next, the beat in the background creates a steady pace sequence keeping the viewer glued to the screen with anticipation. the actors themselves wear masks which hide there faces which give the viewer a creepy feel towards them so the viewer instantly knows that they are the bad guys. As they enter the bank and it becomes a hostage situation making it a intense moment because the viewer doesn't want to see any of the hostages die however the hostages are holding grenades and could die at any moment. the first shot the viewer sees is a extreme wide shot this establishes the scene of which the opening scene is set. there is mainly diagetic sound in the opening of the film however in the first shot there is no noise apart from a ringing noise giving the viewer the impression of silence this builds up the tension and suspense between the film and the viewer keeping the viewer focused on the film, the ringing sound tells the viewer that it is a quiet normal day all quiet and calm when suddenly the window smashes and it becomes chaos this gets the viewer interested in the film and what is going to happen in it. the villains in the opening sequence have clown masks to hide there identity this gives the viewer the impression that. the opening starts of dark suggesting to the audience that it is going to be a dark film and that appeals to audiences that enjoy watching dark horror like films. the opening shot is a wide long shot zooming in on a building (the building  is in the  centre of the shot) this establishes the opening scene and allows the viewer to see what the surrounding area is like. the first characters the viewer sees has a mask and is using a zip line to cross across buildings this straight away tells the viewer that they are up to no good and because of the mask don't want to be identified which tells the viewer they are most likely to be stealing something or breaking the law.
the dark knight is a action/adventure/ drama film it targets a male audience of mainly teenagers and young adults it appeals more to males than to females because males enjoy watching gun fights and action packed films because they can relate to it with their feelings inside where as females prefer romance films as they can relate to it better than an action film.
the clothing the characters are wearing are just everyday clothing for example jeans this shows the audience that the thugs robbing the bank are not professionals and don't care about their appearance they just care about the money however the people hired to run the bank are wearing suits which suggests to the audience that it is a very high end bank meaning that they have a lot of money which is why they are being robbed. at this point in the film the audience cant really tell who is the main character until one of the bank robbers says "he thinks he can just sit out on the job and still take a slice" this makes the viewer think that the boss who hired the bank robbers is the main character but as the bank robber said he isn't there but then the bank robbers start to kill each other making the viewer suspect that the boss has a cunning plan to take all the money for himself then towards the end the main character reveals himself to the audience and he is at gun point, keeping the main character out of the opening scenes raises the suspense between the audience and the film this also raises the tension of the film and to raise the tension even further the director has used close up shots to make the viewer feel closer to the action. the opening shot was a long high angle shot this allows the viewer straight away to see where the characters are and where the film is based. in the background there is a very faint non diagetic music being played this raises the suspense as this notifies the viewer when something bad is about to happen getting the tension between the viewer and the film up quickly.
