Shawshank redemption

shawshank redemption

shawshank redemption is a crime film. straight away the film suggests to the audience that it is a crime genre because the film uses classic music which wouldn't generally be associated with other genres like action or romance the music also suggests to the viewer that the film isn't based in the present because the way the music sounds, sounds like it is being played off a record player this is because in the music you can hear the scratches of the needle on the record giving the old feel towards the audience. the titles that come up in the opening sequence of the film are not bold, huge or outlined titles that rather stick out to the audience but instead are thin pieces of text which is normally associated with the genre crime this instantly tells the audience that the genre of the film is a crime film also the music and titles are the first thing the audience sees so they can focus on the fact that its a crime film also it adds suspense to the film because it keeps the audience patiently waiting which adds  to the mystery generally associated with a crime film. the typical audience would be older audiences including top teenagers the opening scene appeals to these typical audiences by using suspense.
the audience can easily tell who is the main character in shawshank redemption because the first character we see is Andy Dufresne this tells the audience that he plays an important role in the story line of the film also it can tell the audience the plot of them film as he is seen with a gun on his lap this tells the viewer that he is going to kill someone which raises suspicion as to who is it that he wants to kill which again is a classical mystery in a crime thriller.
in the opening of this old time classic it begins with the titles first which were thin and wight with a black background so that the text will stand out to the audience. whilst the titles were being played there was non diagetic sound being played the sound was of an old song which sounded like it was being played off an old radio of some sort this gives the audience the impression that the film is set in the early 20th century. the titles then fade out and the first shot fades in its of a house this keeps suspicion to the viewer as they don't know who's house that is but they do know that it is going to be important, the shot that is used is a long shot this is used to establish the setting of the first scene the camera then pans up and along the side of a car showing the main character of the film, the audience knows that he is the main character because he is in the centre of the shot and is the only character in the scene, when the audience first sees him he is staring at the house previously shown this suggests to the audience that he is up to no good and he is about to break the law.the main character is first shown in a medium shot so that it keeps the audience suspicious of what he is up to it then changes to a close up of the main character pulling out a gun at that point the audience knows for certain that he is about to commit murder to someone in that house but then the audience sees that he has alcohol in his hand at that point the audience then know that it is either against his will that he is about to kill someone or because he is drunk he is about to kill someone. the main character is wearing a suit which suggests that he is not poor and that he is quite stable this tells the audience that it isn't because of money he is about to kill someone. whilst the main characters in the car there is a medium low angle shot looking up at him and at that point he turns off the radio suggesting to the audience that it is time he is about to kill someone, the light in that shot is coming from the bottom left of the screen which lights up the main characters face and makes him look creepy towards the audience.
